URBAN RENEWAL PROCESSES IN THE HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS
Organizers: Tolga İslam, Pelin Tan
The recently released renewal law (law no 5366), “Law on the Protection of Deteriorated Historic and Cultural Heritage through Renewal and Re-use”, forms the basis of the recent renewal projects taking place in the historic districts of the city. The law makes the renewal of dilapidated areas in historic neighborhoods possible by bringing new expropriation powers that give the local authorities the ability to implement a renewal project on several blocks without taking the consent of property owners. A series of neighborhoods are declared renewal areas since 2005 (following the enactment of law 5366) including the pioneering projects in Tarlabaşı, Sulukule and Süleymaniye and other projects in Fener, Balat, Yalı and many other neighborhoods. This process has contributed to the expansion of gentrification to areas that have remained untouched during the earlier rounds of gentrification (during the classic gentrification wave).
The excursion will start at 10:00 at Istanbul Technical University with a small presentation that describes the context of renewal in Istanbul and gives a brief information about the sites that are going to be visited*. The estimated duration time is 4 hours.
*: the sites to be visited will be selected among the recent urban renewal areas mentioned above and will be declared before the excursion.
