We can easily observe the contradiction between discourse and action in the field of architecture in big cities under the global urban investments in national and international scales. While supporting the pluralist, democratic, egalitarian qualities of urban space, by means of information society, urban space is transformed into an object for the global market. On the long run, this process also gives way to a conceptual chaos and to the erosion of cultural and historical values. Despite the terms, such as “locality”, “originality” and “sustainability” which are put as problematic in the globalization era in academic platforms, the echoes of these approaches on the practice of architecture manifests a different discourse. Land rent and capitalistic policies dominate the public interest, the social context and the multidimensional analysis of the environment in the fields of architecture and urban planning. These changes that reflect on the urban space in various levels -from preservation to urban regeneration projects and to the quality of metropolitan space- should be considered as the main problem of architecture today.

The exhibition covers examples from İstanbul, -the host city for XXII. World Congress of Architecture- which are going to be discussed within this context. The aim is to introduce a critical view to how the values and proposals stressed in İstanbul Congress Declaration were reflected in the urban space between the period of 2005-08.

The Doors of the Heaven
A Photo Exhibit of the Great Mosque and Hospital of Divrigi

display details

One of the few Turkish monuments enlisted in UNESCO’s World Architectural Monuments List, the Great Mosque and Hospital of Divriği have been established in 1228-29/9 by Emir Ahmet Shah and his wife Turan Melik during the Mengucekogullari Period. The stone-carved monumental entrance to the mosque that attracts attention with its high-baroque characteristics will be exhibited with large scale photos to reflect its creative, intricate decorative sculptures.
The exhibition has been curated by architect Basri Hamulu under the advisory of Prof. Doğan Kuban, a world-known Turkish architectural historian who has written about the Complex since 1965. The photos are by architect Cemal Emden.
